H E Second Part of our Critical History, which I come now to consider, will (I am willing to believe) be esteem'd no better than a Libel upon the Lord Clarendon, and Mr. Echard: supported by no other Authorities than the History of a Standing Army j a scandalous Pamphlet written in the Year 1698, without either the Author's, Printer's, or Publisher's Name, a pretty plain Sign, that every Thing contain'd H therein therein is not perfectly right Bishop Burners History of his own Time, and some few Authors of the like Integrity: And ot' what Authority these are to run down the Credit of our very best Hiitorians, I leave the Reader to judge. The Lord Clarendons Reputation, as an Historian, is too well establiih'd to be capable of receiving the least Damage from the aforefaid Historians: and Mr. Echard's History is so well esteem'd, by all true Lovers of History, as to render our Author's Work (if not already doom'd to the Pastry-Cook's, or buried in Oblivion) infamous and contemptible j and, if he thinks our Author worthy of Notice, I hope he himself will (in Vindication of his own Character ) talk with him in a small time. But to digress no farther: He informs us, p. i6x. 'That in the four following Reigns, there is no History upon which the Reader can depend. In this general Charge I don't find that the Great Biihop Burnet, his favourite, who has written upon three of those Reigns, is excepted: tho' he afterwards flouriihes so much upon his Character, and seems to me to contradict what he here fays. 'Tis true, there are many Exceptions to this Observation viz, of Partiality in Historians and my Lord of Salisbury's late History is an unquestionable one: But when was there ever a Man whose Knowledge of the World, and Affairs, began at twenty Tears of...
